I am taking on 100k in June to raise money for Day One Trauma Support! 🧡

At the end of May last year, I slipped on some wet slate whilst descending Cnicht in Snowdonia and broke my elbow and arm. “Proper mangled” was what the nurse diagnosed me when I arrived at minor injuries.  I had to walk for nearly three hours  to reach the car park. It took another three hours to get to Ysbyty Gwynedd A and E by taxi and then ambulance.

After surgery and seven weeks of physio, I was encouraged to start moving again. Then I rolled my ankle on a curb, landed on my elbow and sheared the bone from the metal plates, and had to go through surgery and rehab all over again.

The pain was constant but the worst part was the depression that followed. Even though both accidents were just accidents, I felt like I had let everyone down.

My family missed holidays and I spent a lot of time on my own. Lucy had to take unpaid time off work to help care for me. I missed friends’ weddings and my colleagues had to cover for me at school.

Things only really started to change when my NHS physio in Sheffield told me about Day One Trauma. They listened to me and helped me start to rebuild  my confidence.

My injury was small compared to many accidents but has had a huge effect on my life.

That is why this June, one year after my first surgery, I want to raise money for Day One Trauma to help others who need support with their mental health after accidents.  I aim to run, walk and row 100k in June

Day One are the only national charity to provide personalised care to anyone affected by any kind of catastrophic injury, their loved ones and their families – for as long it takes.

Your support today will mean the world to someone recovering from the emotional and physical trauma of a major injury.

Fastest than I’ve done in a little while. Nice to get out early and do a parkrun. Really missed them last year. Lucky to be able to run and glad to have not hurt myself.

Day 6

Saturday 7th Jun
No k today. Work got in the way. Try again tomorrow.

Day 5

Saturday 7th Jun
Went for a 1 mile walk in my lunch! Not ideal and had to catch up with stuff but good to get it done.

Day 4

Wednesday 4th Jun
1 mile run after work.
Really didn’t want to go but felt guilty and went. Zzzz. Trying to move everyday if I can!

Day 3

Tuesday 3rd Jun
3km row at the gym. Rowing got my through ITP and was frustrating not to be able to do it after my elbow injury. Not as strong as I was but getting there.

Day 2 3.2k run

Monday 2nd Jun
2 mile run up a hill and back. Hard work! Didn’t break my arm.

1: 7.5km

Sunday 1st Jun
Walked with Chris to Sheffield Walking Basketball and back.

Encouraged by my physio to do something different with my arm I’ve been trying to go to walking basketball twice a month. It’s mostly non contact but been good to use my arms in different ways. 🏀
